Long-awaited bus terminus opens in northeastern Athens

A major bus terminus begins operating today at the Nomismatokopeio metro station in northeastern Athens. Nine bus routes (406, 407, 308, 125, 303, 304, 305, 316 and 315) will start at the Line 3 metro station, instead of Ethniki Amyna station. Lines 416, 418 and 404 will set out from Ethniki Amyna, instead of Katehaki station. Two new routes, 409 and 413, traveling in a loop between Papagou, Ethniki Amyna and Katehaki, also start operating today.

Kinky policewoman

Officer suspended over photos

Police in Attica on Saturday suspended a policewoman for “indecent behavior unbecoming to a police officer” after discovering that she had been maintaining a page on the social networking site MySpace. The page, which had been set up under a false name, allegedly featured photographs of the officer in bars dressed in leather and skimpy underwear.

Violent burglary

A baker and his son on Saturday were tied up by three robbers who broke into their home near the port of Lavrio, southern Attica, and fled with 3,000 euros. The three intruders broke into the family home, situated above the bakery, at around 1 a.m. on Saturday. The father sustained minor injuries when he tried to disarm one of the robbers who threatened him with a knife. The trio then tied up both father and son with electrical cable. Once the robbers had fled, the two victims freed themselves and called the police. The robbers were still at large late yesterday.

Firebomb attack

Unidentified vandals early yesterday smashed the glass facade of a tax office in the district of Neos Cosmos, near central Athens, before hurling firebombs into the interior. According to local residents, six youths carried out the attack that caused serious damage but no injuries.

Coast corpse

Rescue workers in Alimos, southeast of Athens, late on Friday found the body of a youth believed to be a Romanian boy missing since Monday. Police said that the body found was that of a 16-year-old Romanian, who ran into the sea to escape police on Monday after a beach guard he is alleged to have mugged with the help of two Albanian youths alerted the authorities. The Albanians, aged 16 and 17, reportedly claimed not to recognize the body.

Quarry death

A 60-year-old worker was crushed to death late on Friday when he fell into a machine on the site of the quarry where had been employed in the Cretan prefecture of Iraklio. Police were investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.

Illegal antiquities

The 25-year-old owner of a cafeteria in Kaisariani, eastern Athens, yesterday faced a prosecutor on charges of trading in illegal antiquities following the discovery on his premises of several artifacts. Among the items seized were a gold ring and wreath.

Fatal jealousy

A 30-year-old Bangladeshi man was detained yesterday after allegedly knifing his 24-year-old Romanian girlfriend to death at their rented apartment in Kolonos, central Athens. According to police, the assailant had been jealous of the 24-year-old.
