Save the Temple of Aphrodite Campaign

6th Century Temple to Aphrodite to be buried to make way for Apartment Building

In an ancient part, of the modern city of Thessaloniki, now a part of the municipality of Thermaikos lays the Square of Antigonidon. Once part of a sacred district of Temples, today if one were to drive by the square you would never realize that under the areas urban sprawl and sandwiched in-between modern buildings lays a treasure of enormous significance, a beautiful 6th century Temple to the Goddess Aphrodite.

First excavated in 1936, the temple, which is 200 years older than the Parthenon was all but forgotten during the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II. It was not until 2000, that fate of this lost treasure resurfaced due to the demolition of a two story building, which rested above the Temple. This allowed archaeologists once again to excavate the location. This time having the opportunity to uncover one-third of this forgotten piece of Thessaloniki’s history and thanks to the efforts of those involved, a small fraction of the treasures from this site is now on display in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki.

At present, the Greek Government is attempting to entomb and conceal the Temple, rather than fully excavating the site. Originally upon its discovery, an initial decision was made to continue its excavation; however, this decision was later overturned. Since then the fate of this important part of Hellenic history has been ‘frozen’ and was rescheduled to be discussed in April of 2011, but has since been postponed to be reopened early this year. If the Greek Government and the property owner get their way, the temple will remain buried, and an irreplaceable national treasure will be lost.

This response by the local government displays just how corrupt and apathetic Greek politicians are to our National Heritage and future. Their decision reeks of a biased agenda against developing any place other than Athens and in some ways our unconscious decision to yield to the radical revisionists from Skopje who claim the ancient Macedonians did not worship the same Gods as other ancient Greeks.

We therefore call on all Patriotic Greeks living inside the motherland and throughout the Diaspora, as well as Philhellenes to join us in protesting this sacrilegious attack on our National Heritage. Please contact the Municipality via email, phone and/or fax to urge the Mayor to stop this injustice from taking place. Please feel free to write your own email in protest or use the sample letter found below. Together we can show the world the light of Hellenism still burns and will not fade away against the overwhelming pressure of modernization. Together we can make a difference.

I am contacting you concerning the issue of the Temple of Aphrodite in Antigonidon Square. It has recently come to my attention that this magnificent piece of Greek history has been left covered by urban sprawl and is scheduled to become the foundation of a new apartment building.

At a time, when Greece finds itself amidst an economic and social crisis, this ancient Temple is nothing more than a gift from the Gods. The Temple of Aphrodite is a National Treasure with the potential to be a rallying point for the entire Greek nation and provides the city of Thessaloniki with an opportunity to help revitalize our ruined economy with what would certainly be the most spectacular tourist attraction in all of Northern Greece.

In any other part of the Mediterranean, the discovery of ancient Temple, 200 years older than the Parthenon, would have made headlines worldwide. Why is it then that the local government is contemplating entombing and concealing the Temple, rather than fully excavating the site? To simple rebury the Temple is sacrilegious and will result in an irreplaceable national treasure being lost.

Now when Greek citizens cannot afford to pay their rent, just who does the property owner think he will get to live in these new apartments? Is this how we crown our ancestors, by burying their great achievements, rather than resurrecting them? Is it merely a coincidence that a time when Greeks feel angry, desperate and disillusioned that a Temple to Goddess of Love appears to us? I think not. Please don’t let this crime against humanity happen. Restore the Temple of Aphrodite and with it our National Pride and Unity.

Ένα παράξενο μυστικό, ένα μοναδικό ντοκουμέντο κρύβεται στην καρδιά της Θεσσαλονίκης, στην πλατεία Αντιγονιδών. Το μοναδικό Ναό της Αφροδίτης που είχε στηθεί στην πλατεία των Ιερών, δηλαδή πριν από αιώνες στη θέση που βρίσκεται σήμερα η πλατεία. Πρόκειται για τον ύστερο-αρχαϊκό ναό της Αφροδίτης , στην πλατεία Αντιγονιδών στη Θεσσαλονίκη.

Ένα σημαντικό παράδειγμα ιωνικού ναού του 6ου αι. π.Χ. που μετακινήθηκε στη σημερινή του τοποθεσία στα ρωμαϊκά χρόνια, για να αποτελέσει τμήμα ενός προαστίου γεμάτου ιερά και δημόσια κτίρια. Τα θεμέλιά του, χαμένα κάπου μεταξύ της πυκνής βλάστησης και της άναρχης σύγχρονης δόμησης που χαρακτηρίζει τη σύγχρονη πόλη είναι απροσπέλαστα και άγνωστα στον ανυποψίαστο περαστικό.

Μετά από ανασκαφές στο χώρο το 1936 ο ναός κέντρισε για λίγο το σύγχρονο ενδιαφέρον για να πέσει όμως και πάλι στην αφάνεια κατά τον Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο. Έπρεπε να φτάσουμε στο τέλος της χιλιετίας - το 2000 - για να ξαναρχίσουν οι έρευνες, από αρχαιολόγους. Τότε ήταν που αποκαλύφθηκαν, μετά και την κατεδάφιση σύγχρονου κτιρίου που τα κάλυπτε, τα κατάλοιπα του ναού: ελληνορωμαϊκά αγάλματα αλλά και σημαντικά αρχαιότερα αρχιτεκτονικά κομμάτια. Αυτό επέτρεψε στους αρχαιολόγους άλλη μια φορά για να ανασκάψει τη θέση. Ορισμένα από αυτά είναι που εκτίθενται σήμερα στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Θεσσαλονίκης, εντυπωσιάζοντας αλλά παράλληλα αδυνατώντας να αποτυπώσουν το μεγαλείο του κτίσματος.

Σήμερα με μπάζωμα και εξαφάνιση απειλείται ο ύστερος-αρχαϊκός ναός της Αφροδίτης που ανακαλύφτηκε στη διάρκεια ανασκαφών κατά το παρελθόν σε αντίθεση με την κοινή γνώμη. Αρχικά επάνω στην ανακάλυψή της, μια αρχική απόφαση λήφθηκε να συνεχίσει την ανασκαφή της εντούτοις, η παρούσα απόφαση αργότερα ανατράπηκε.

Το θέμα της απαλλοτρίωσης, μετά από ένσταση των ιδιοκτητών του οικοπέδου, επρόκειτο να συζητηθεί τον Απρίλιο του 2011 σε συνεδρίαση της Επιτροπής Απαλλοτριώσεων του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού, η οποία όμως αναβλήθηκε για το 2012. Αν η απαλλοτρίωση απορριφθεί και η ένσταση γίνει δεκτή, ο ναός θα μπαζωθεί!

Επομένως καλούμε όλους τους Έλληνες που ζουν εντός και εκτός Ελλάδας, καθώς και όλους τους ξένους φιλέλληνες να ενώσουν τις δυνάμεις τους στην διαμαρτυρία εναντίον αυτής της ιερόσυλης επίθεσης στην εθνική κληρονομιά μας. Πρέπει να διαμαρτυρηθούμε όλοι μαζί και δυναμικά. Ένας εύκολος τρόπος είναι να στείλτε -μέσω του ηλεκτρονικού ταχυδρομείου, τηλεφώνου ή/και με fax - μια επιστολή στο δήμο της Θεσσαλονίκης για να να δοθεί επιτέλους ένα τέλος σε αυτή την αδικία.

ΕΠΙΣΤΟΛΗ ΔΕΙΓΜΑΤΩΝ
Αγαπητοί (όνομα ενθέτων εδώ),

Έρχομαι σε επαφή μαζί σας σχετικά με το ζήτημα του ναού της Αφροδίτης στην πλατεία Αντιγονιδών στην Θεσσαλονίκη . Έπεσε πρόσφατα στην προσοχή μου ότι αυτό το θαυμάσιο κομμάτι της Ελληνικής αρχαίας ιστορίας έχει πέσει θύμα της άναρχης δόμησης και σχεδιάζεται πάνω στο σημείο αυτό η ανέγερση νέου κτηρίου διαμερισμάτων.

Σε μια εποχή, όπου η Ελλάδα βρίσκεται στη μέση μιας οικονομικής και κοινωνικής κρίσης, αυτός ο αρχαίος ναός δεν είναι τίποτα περισσότερο από ένα δώρο των Θεών και μία πολιτιστική κληρονομία. Ο ναός της Αφροδίτης είναι ένας εθνικός θησαυρός ο οποίος θα μπορούσε να προσελκύσει Έλληνες και ξένους τουρίστες σαν μέγα αξιοθέατο και να παράσχει στην πόλη της Θεσσαλονίκης μία επιπλέον δυνατότητα εσόδων και οικονομικής αναζωογόνησης.

Σε οποιοδήποτε άλλο μέρος της Μεσογείου, η ανακάλυψη ενός τέτοιου αρχαίου ναού, παλαιότερο κατά 200 χρόνια από το Παρθενώνα, θα είχε καταστεί ανακάλυψη παγκόσμιου ενδιαφέροντος. Γιατί η τοπική αυτοδιοίκηση προσπαθεί να αποκρύψει την ανακάλυψη του ναού αντί να ξεκινήσει ανασκαφές για να έρθει στην επιφάνεια; Η απόκρυψη και το θάψιμο του ναού κάτω από μία πολυκατοικία είναι ιεροσυλία η οποία θα οδηγήσει έναν αναντικατάστατο εθνικό θησαυρό να χαθεί.

Τέλος, σε μία περίοδο όπου οι Έλληνες πολίτες δεν μπορούν να αντέξουν οικονομικά τόσα βάρη και στερούνται τα αναγκαία, πόσο μάλλον να πληρώνουν ενοίκια ακριβών διαμερισμάτων ή να αγοράσουν , με τι σκεπτικό ο ιδιοκτήτης σκέφτεται ότι θα μπορέσει να τα νοικιάσει ή να τα πουλήσει και σε ποιούς αυτά τα νέα διαμερίσματα;
Αυτός είναι ο φόρος τιμής προς προγόνους μας με το θάψιμο των μεγάλων επιτευγμάτων τους αντί να τα αναδείξουμε σαν μέρος του πολιτισμού μας;
Είναι αλήθεια απλός μια σύμπτωση σε μία περίοδο στην οποία οι Έλληνες νιώθουν, απελπισμένοι και απογοητευμένοι ένας αρχαίος ναός της θεάς της αγάπης να αποκαλύπτεται σε μας; Υποθέτω πως όχι.

Για τον λόγο αυτό παρακαλώ όλους τους εμπλεκόμενους να μην αφήστε να συμβεί αυτό το έγκλημα όχι μόνο κατά της Ελλάδα και των Ελλήνων αλλά όλης της ανθρωπότητας.
Αποκαταστήστε λοιπόν το ναό της Αφροδίτης και μαζί με αυτόν και την εθνική υπερηφάνεια μας.

Save the temple of the goddess Aphrodite

A strange secret, a unique monument lies at the heart of Thessaloniki at the Square Antigonidon. Behind the construction metal fences on the northeast side of the square is a unique treasure, which was well hidden for centuries. The uniquely beautiful temple of the goddess Aphrodite was erected in the square of the Sacreds in the area which is now the square of Antigonidon. The discovery from the 6th century BC was carried to Thessaloniki by King Aineias (Founder of the city of Aineia). Today this location is the suburbs of the city of Michaniona.
In any other corner of the world, the news of such wealth would mobilize stakeholders and citizens. Unfortunately, the incredible historic value of this monument is in danger because it is located on property where apartments are due to be built. The monument is likely to provide the foundation of this apartment structure, despite the mobilization of citizens of the neighborhood surrounding the square.
The monuments is a national heritage and belongs to all future generations of Greeks. It is also a unique attraction for the city of Thessaloniki, in which there are no other Greek monuments. At a time when our country relies on heavy industry and tourism, the corrupt politicians do not care to save one of the greatest treasures of antiquity, which will attract tourists to the second largest city in the country.

When and how the temple was discovered?

The Late Archaic temple was dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. We know this by the excavation fragments found all over the city and from the excavation fragments found on this property during the construction of the apartment foundation. This Ionic architectural style is found all over the city of Thessaloniki. Most of the ruins were excavated in 1936 during the construction of the apartments foundation which is located at the intersection of Crystal street and Government street

The area now known to us as government House was known in Roman times as the site of the sacred, where there was a concentration of temples and shrines. In 2000, on the occasion of the demolition of a two story building on land locate on Andigonidon square, the archaeologist A. Tassios excavated this rich hidden history of our city. Tassios excavated the temple of Aphrodite, statues of Grecian-Roman times, and many architectural fragments. The columns of the temple which reach 7 meters in height, along with many other treasures are now exhibited in the hall of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki thanks to the efforts of the archeologists and the officers of the 6th department of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities.

The value of the monument:

George Karadedos, associate professor at Aristotle University, told journalist Stelina Margaritidou, "This is a unique finding most of which is exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki." The height of the columns reaches seven meters and realistically cannot be exhibited in any exhibit halls of the museum in order to highlight the exact size. We know that the rest of the temple continues west under the pavement of the streets of Governors Square and Antigonidon Square. The architectural and artistic value of the temple is immense. The temple can be saved and honored as part of Greece's rich history if its importance is realized and respected by the government. Cultural pride and history must be preserved and valued. Only one third of the possible artifacts have been excavated from this site.

The Greek Government's agenda to entomb and conceal the Temple:The initial decision of the Central Archaeological Council, shortly after the excavation of the monument, was to expropriate the land and proceed with the excavation of the Temple. Later, the decision was revised and the Council decided to keep the basement of the apartment building under construction. Two years ago the fate of the temple was discussed again at the CAC (Central Archeological Council) and was given positive votes for the expropriation of land, since this time the issue has been "frozen."

The issue of expropriation, after opposition from the owners of the land, was to be discussed on April 13, 2011 at a meeting of the Committee of the Ministry of Culture Receipts, but was postponed in the absence of a quorum until after Winter holidays. If the expropriation is rejected and the opposition accepted, the temple will remain buried and a national treasure will be left unseen.
